Ask HN: Does anyone use x32 ABI of Linux?
Recently I was reminded of x32 Linux ABI [0]. Note: not 32 bit x86, but x86_64 with 32 bit pointers.
I have read about it few years ago when it was being merged to Linux kernel, but not much afterwards. I understand that it did not become popular. It is not better enough to justify the hassle of yet another architecture. Of course there is also the chicken and the egg problem of library support.
I’m wondering if it would be a bit better for older machines. But problems stated earlier still stands. Maybe it would be useful for ChromeOS-like OS (resource constrained and most of the software is 1st party).
Nevertheless, does anyone use it? Professionally or personally?
