I think a lot of this has to do with perception. As in, "how am I perceived if I take a check from the government." We have cultural norms as to what is "valuable". Maybe someone focusing on their art will one day have more meaning, and you won't have to feel bad taking a check from Uncle Sam while you work on your painting, sculpting, or woodworking skills.
