Its a classic surface area to volume ratio thing combined with scalability and miniaturization limits, in that its always the case that the smallest thing will get really close to the larger thing while it quickly takes its losses, and if that's in weapons range the larger thing will get scratched up a bit, and if the smaller things have a secret killer weapon or strategy, they win.
