It doesn't seem that any particular ethics are being "derived" from Star Wars in the article. The author looks instead to be using the story as a jumping-off point for discussion of various issues and tradeoffs in the ethical space. In any case, the site is called "Sci-Fi Policy" which leads me to believe this kind of exegesis is their bread and butter. Perhaps they aren't usually making airtight arguments in their posts but I think the discussion is still useful and fun.
