Just basic things like "there's no such thing as privacy when you're on the internet", and "Facebook owns all your private chats and exploits them to coerce you to click ads and use more Facebook".
- amiga-workbench 10y agoThis all used to be common sense and was drilled into people when the web was new, along with "when online, never share your real name or location with anybody, always use a pseudonym." Roll on 2016 and people are pouring every personal detail into the web, what the fuck happened?
- gruez 10y ago"social networks" happened
- alphabettsy 10y agoYep. People think they're sharing with their "friends" because you get to choose by accepting people and don't seem to fully understand they're handing it over to a megacorp and their data hoarding buddies.
- nxc18 10y agoDepending on a pseudonym for anonymity is dangerous... It would be better to adopt a real-name policy and consciously remember to only take actions that you don't mind being associated with your real identity forever and always. When you depend on fake names, it only takes a sentence (or possibly less) to permanently shatter the lie and associate all those actions you thought were private with your real identity. This is less applicable with things like Facebook tracking ads and Google searches, but in that case, a good approach is separating browsers/devices.
- morgante 10y agoAgreed. That's exactly why my username everywhere is my real name (morgante). I'm under no illusion that anything I say online is anonymous.
- MatchaPunk 10y agoI use pseudonyms, but it's mostly to keep accounts separate for logistical reasons. My accounts associated with gaming and hobbies have different names than my accounts where I talk about politics and news, and so on. I don't really want to mix those spheres of my life. Of course someone could connect the dots, and I avoid anything that could be truly troublesome. But this provides a useful 'soft' barrier.
