Condoms ruin the sensation and are so bad at preventing pregnancy they're on par with withdrawal. We should make hormonal birth control and IUDs cheaper and more accessible instead.
- teej 10y agoSpot on. Turns out when you give away free IUDs, teenage pregnancy and abortion rates plummet. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/06/science/colorados-push-against-teenage-pregnancies-is-a-startling-success.html http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/06/science/colorados-push-aga...
- sqldba 10y agoCondoms are on par with withdrawal? Do you have a source for that?
- jpatokal 10y agoCondoms have a theoretical failure rate of 2%/year, which is much better than withdrawal, but a practical failure rate of 10-15%, which is about the same. http://goaskalice.columbia.edu/answered-questions/explanation-condom-failure-rates http://goaskalice.columbia.edu/answered-questions/explanatio...
- pavel_lishin 10y agoDoesn't that just circle back around to poor education?
- dogma1138 10y agoI would actually like to find the stats for that; Googling produces studies with very different figures. Also this is about HIV; it's easier to get HIV when condoms are improperly used than to get pregnant; sores or cuts on the genital skin for example can lead to HIV transmission whilst they won't lead to pregnancy. A condom slipping off or getting ripped during sex can lead to HIV transmission but not to pregnancy, etc. etc.
- pavel_lishin 10y ago> Condoms ruin the sensation Maybe my penis was shipped with a defect, but for me the difference between condom and no condom hasn't been that dramatic.
- oxide 10y agothe thing about condoms is they need to be on hand and free. I'm not going to put off what little random chance pussy I get because I don't have a condom, and I've always been too poor to spend 15 bucks on a pack of condoms I'll likely never use. I grew up in Arizona where sexual education consisted of a 10 minute video shown to me in the 5th grade and there were no clinics passing out freebies.
- dogma1138 10y agoWell if you carry protection you might also increase your chances; I'm pretty sure if you would search you'll find places that give out condoms. You also can buy condoms at a pharmacy or online that aren't one of the big brands that work just as fine. Most condoms I bought have an expiration date which is 3-5 years from their purchase date, if you indeed get such a little chance to have sexual encounters I'm pretty sure that even at 15$ a pack would last you plenty of time. P.S. I guess this is a non-US thing but quite often females also carry male condoms if they go out looking for sex. Going out in search of a random sexual encounter and not having protection on hand is simply irresponsible way beyond the risk of an accidental pregnancy.
