It was a very ballsy move. Even by failing, it still went down in history as a pretty masterful move. It also caused Germany to change their accounting laws around things such as that. In the US an equivalent move would be illegal. The US learned from Short Squeezes when the NY City Council tried to punish Cornelius Vanderbilt and he exacted revenge on them.
