There's still a bit of an ideological divide between the Bazel "all your build dependencies are checked-in" and the autotools "you must provide these build dependencies" model. I'm not sure we'd ever drop support for building on systems that aren't Tier-1 to us, but I could see us getting closer to the Bazel model for the platforms we actually ship on.
