One important thing to know is that this concerns Java on the desktop, not on the server side. Also, there are multiple JDK vendors aside from Oracle.
Projects like OpenJDK are governed by a Java community process and Red Hat and others sit on the board. GPL license. So that will not be affected.
- dozzie 10y agoHard to tell when Oracle decides otherwise. Google had something (Dalvik) that looked like a separate implementation of Java, but got hit with a copyright suit. I say for a long time that Java seems like a liability (though I don't say it too extensively, as I almost don't use it for technical reasons).
- blueyes 10y agoOracle has no say on things built with other JDKs. This is a non-issue.
- dozzie 10y agoThe problem is that you can't say this for sure in the USA. Java's owner, Oracle, demonstrated more than enough bad will regarding their language's users (Google with their Dalvik), and the legal system in US allowed them to have a say with regard to something that they should never ever been granted to (a separate implementation that mimicked what the original publicly commited to do). You, not being Oracle, can't tell when, how, nor who they will strike again, and legal system in the US is fscked up enough to allow them to win, no matter how ridiculous their claim will be.
