Don't know how they do it, but i know you can go to one of those small phone stores, that are located everywhere in European countries. They have tricks in their sleeves. I gave my only iPhone 5 to my father, i had forgotten to disconnect it from my account and it was looked to a carrier. They "fixed" it in an hour.
