I remember there was a mathematician (I forgot who) who solved it without outside help (like you) and without the use of computers - absolutely crazy

  You don't really need to be a mathematician to do it. All it takes is patience and being good at spotting patterns and observing in general. My brother-in-law solved one before the Internet era all by himself. It took him few months, but he eventually did it.
