Is it going to happen though, if people are separated enough to not even notice? It seems a runaway process. As people get more and more unequal, it becomes easier for them to put up walls in the society than trying to fix it. You are also right though, that it doesn't make sense to put it all on the commuters. At least they are not avoiding society entirely.
