I mainly work with PostgreSQL but have had to write some web applications that use Microsoft SQL, because it was already in place. I see no benefit to Microsoft SQL. Instead it is more limited than PostgreSQL and 100 times harder to work with. Indeed, it is analogous to asking why do businesses use Microsoft Internet Explorer instead of Firefox, or Microsoft Windows instead of Linux? I expect that the answer is the same for all three.
