There is no doubt that the big four (Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook) and hot tech startups like Airbnb pay really well. However, I think that "normal" companies in the Bay Area pay normal salaries. If you are a normal software engineer, who wants to have a family, you are better off in Zurich.
