I think a problem is lack of respect for the fact that a huge part of design is WORK. It takes time and effort. Not innate talent or magic (though those help).

I think a problem is lack of respect for the fact that a huge part of design is WORK. It takes time and effort. Not innate talent or magic (though those help). A developer thinks "I need another 5 values from a user, so I'll put another 5 text boxes on end of the form. Done! Wait, this looks like shit, I must not be a good designer." No! It's shit because you didn't do any design work! It's not that you didn't finish a bad design, it's that you haven't even started any design.
