Isn't there some disk caching going on here? Surely the OS is not writing directly to disk immediately after gunzipping. I don't think that's enough to explain

Isn't there some disk caching going on here? Surely the OS is not writing directly to disk immediately after gunzipping. I don't think that's enough to explain the large difference, though.
