As somebody who had to code in Pascal (in this millennia) I just... I'm not sure I can get passed that to enjoy the game. I think this is the moment where I realize that I'm a coding language bigot.
- seba_dos1 10y agoI haven't used Pascal for a very long time now, but AFAIK Free Pascal is going pretty nice and modern. Apparently, there are some very nice and polished games implemented in Pascal, like Hedgewars or Ultrastar Deluxe.
- andrewclunn 10y agoInteresting (looked it up thanks to your post). As a means of recompiling old code for newer systems that is a great solution.
- int_19h 10y agoThe most interesting part is that they've also made a very nice cross-platform clone of 1) Turbo Vision (yes, text mode and all), and 2) VCL. Then, using that TV clone, they wrote a cross-platform clone of the original DOS Borland Pascal IDE - that even comes in the base FPC distribution. Works great in Linux console: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FPIDE_1.0.10_de.png https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FPIDE_1.0.10_de.png And using VCL, they wrote a cross-platform clone of Delphi (circa version 3) IDE! http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/Screenshots http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/Screenshots
- dejv 10y agoThere were quite a few commercial games written in Pascal/Delphi back in late 90s and early 2000s. Original War was quite successful RTS game that comes to my mind.
- pjmlp 10y agoTurbo Pascal was the Unity of many game developers on MS-DOS days. Of course for serious games, one would use macro Assemblers like MASM and TASM. Or for those short on money for the pro versions, which included the Assemblers, inline Assembly with naked functions/procedures.
- baq 10y agoi wanted to say that this code is a great example of how modern pascal is quite good, actually...
- pjmlp 10y agoPascal was already modern in the early 90's, when using Quick, Think, TMT, Turbo Pascal. Check the feature list of Turbo Pascal 6.0, released in 1990. https://archive.org/details/bitsavers_borlandturVersion6.0ProgrammersGuide_11460728 https://archive.org/details/bitsavers_borlandturVersion6.0Pr...
