As a Canadian I oppose this, and not because I'm worried about money or taxes. I oppose this because the CBC provides news and entertainment in a way that directly competes with Canada's privately owned news and TV networks. As the government owned network grows private sources will lose their audience and voice, and Canadians will only be left with one voice, the government's voice. Further, unlike the BBC, the CBC answers directly to parliament. This means that the ruling party has direct control over the network and, should they desire, they can make it show only news and programs favorable to them. This makes the CBC a threat to Canadian democracy.
