It is also worth taking a step back and noting that Apple supports its hardware for a long time. This is done because it supports user experience - the software/apps, cloud services, media etc (aka "ecosystem"). While Apple has nice hardware margins, the ecosystem is what helps keep people loyal, keeps developers on it, and makes Apple a fair bit of revenue too. Life is simpler for all the more up to date all the devices are.
- simonh 10y agoMy daughter just got a hand me down 5 from a relative a few months ago, before that she was using my old 3GS. It wouldn't get OS updates of course, but it still worked perfectly with the App Store. She installed Whatsapp and I found I could even still download software I bought many years ago that doesn't even appear in the App Store anymore. Not bad for a 7 year old phone.

- Tepix 10y agoToo bad it's impossible to secure that old phone that no longer gets updates and has known security holes (unless you only use it in airplane mode).
- simonh 10y agoIt got OS updates for 5 years. It's been out of support for only 2 years. How many Android phones sold 2 years ago are still getting updates? How many sold today will get any updates whatsoever?
