- richardwhiuk 10y agoThe problem is in the sub Nexus pricing zone. If you get a Nexus, the story isn't too bad for 18 months. The iPhone SE is likely to have a shorter security lifetime than the flagship devices, as you are effectively buying 1/2 year old hardware.
- illumin8 10y agoFrom the article: > Apple is still shipping security updates, albeit on iOS 9, for the iPhone 4s which was released in 2011 (5 years ago). The iPhone 5 is still being kept up to date with iOS 10. Apple has a very good track record here. Based on past experience, it's likely that the iPhone SE will continue to receive security updates well past 2020.
- pm90 10y agoThis is exactly why I switched. My Nexus 5 which worked perfectly for a couple of years, suddenly crashed. And I looked up the new Nexus/Pixel phone and decided it was much better to switch to iPhone SE for a smallish phone which would be cheap, dependable, reliable and supported for a longer time.
- 0xFFC 10y agoMy Nexus 5 glass broke last week, I am in exact position as you, after looking at market I thought there is no way I am buying another phone from Google(let alone other manufacturers). Now I am happily switching to iPhone SE which I am 100% sure will get supported more than pixel phones.
- zanny 10y agoMeanwhile, Windows 7 is supported until 2020, and was released in 2009, and could run on hardware up to about ~7 years old at the time. That means an effective support period of about 18 years. The entire cellphone ecosystem is toxic because of how it treats hardware as disposable in an effort to coerce money from users. I find that phones of the Galaxy S3 / Moto G first gen era are sufficient for 80% of use cases, but since the software stops working and depends on Cyanogenmod for long term usability it is a PITA and lets the hardware manufacturers off the hook for gross mistreatment of users.
- rogerbinns 10y agoThe SE is based on the 6S (released a year ago). I'll bet the SE is supported for far longer than the just released Pixel! It is also worth taking a step back and noting that Apple supports its hardware for a long time. This is done because it supports user experience - the software/apps, cloud services, media etc (aka "ecosystem"). While Apple has nice hardware margins, the ecosystem is what helps keep people loyal, keeps developers on it, and makes Apple a fair bit of revenue too. Life is simpler for all the more up to date all the devices are.
- simonh 10y agoMy daughter just got a hand me down 5 from a relative a few months ago, before that she was using my old 3GS. It wouldn't get OS updates of course, but it still worked perfectly with the App Store. She installed Whatsapp and I found I could even still download software I bought many years ago that doesn't even appear in the App Store anymore. Not bad for a 7 year old phone.

- Tepix 10y agoToo bad it's impossible to secure that old phone that no longer gets updates and has known security holes (unless you only use it in airplane mode).
- simonh 10y agoIt got OS updates for 5 years. It's been out of support for only 2 years. How many Android phones sold 2 years ago are still getting updates? How many sold today will get any updates whatsoever?
- kuschku 10y ago> the traditional Nexus pricing zone There’s an iPhone selling for 200-250$ right now?
- rogerbinns 10y agoI refer you to this chart - http://www.droid-life.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/nexus-phone-pricing-history.png http://www.droid-life.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/nexus-p... - from this article - http://www.droid-life.com/2014/10/16/nexus-6-price/ http://www.droid-life.com/2014/10/16/nexus-6-price/ $400 is very much traditional Nexus pricing zone.
- kuschku 10y agoThe Nexus is sold at 400€ on day 1 of being available. But we’re not exactly talking about a new phone here – we’re talking about phones released almost a year ago. A fair comparison would be the cost of Nexus phones one year after being introduced. Which is between 200€ and 250€ – as I can attest, as I just bought a Nexus 5X for that.
- jsz0 10y agoNothing brand new however there is a huge second hand market for iPhones. Looks like you can get an iPhone 6 for around $250-$350 which is a pretty good deal in my opinion.
- kuschku 10y agoWell, the point is that I can buy today a 2015 Nexus 5X new for 250€. But not a iPhone 6, or iPhone SE new for 250€. Not even an iPhone 5S.
