Can you explain how illegal immigrants are able to rent in the New York market? Surely the landlords will demand identification and references and would refuse someone who is illegal?
- davidf18 10y agoIn Manhattan, generally, there is more background checking and credit rating, etc. But I'm not so certain that is true in the outer reaches of NYC which would have housing that is more affordable to lower-wage workers. Overall, NYC (and others) do not check papers for public school, health care, ... at least as far as I know. In fact, there was a NYTimes op-ed within the past month where 200 students at Berkeley are illegal immigrants.
