Ask HN: Can FOSS be a tool of political change?

Recently I've decided that, for various reasons, I no longer wanted to financially support certain media companies and have found Kodi to be a viable alternative. In many ways, I find it superior to my previous cable subscription. It was a pain to set up on all my TVs using Raspberry Pi 3's and honestly what I did is beyond the abilities and desire of most "regular" folks. My question is, if we as techies can modify tools like Kodi to make them basically plug and play for "regular" folks and promote it was a way to "vote with your feet" (like I did), can we make a meaningful impact on the wallets of EvilCorps like the ones I just got away from?
