It is not "fine" at all. CNN last week intentionally reported the absurd claim that Richard Spencer questioned whether Jews are people. They knew it was incorrect, and reported it anyway.
Only later did they issue a quiet retraction. This is par for the course for US media organizations.
- tptacek 10y agoReconstituting the same false equivalences over and over again isn't going to make the argument any more compelling. Really, you're just making the case for us. Two responses: 1. CNN misapprehended Spencer's comment, which wasn't about whether Jewish people are human, but instead whether members of the mainstream media are. The story wasn't fabricated --- it was misreported. Again: the media does not have to be perfect for us to reasonably talk about "fakenews", which is webspam consisting of entirely fabricated stories. 2. Here's something you will not see happening on fakenews sites: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3961672/CNN-Jake-Tapper-apologize-unacceptable-banner-text.html http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3961672/CNN-Jake-Tap... Look! A retraction! PS: It's worth adding that part of the uproar over this CNN chyron is because Spencer is in fact a white supremacist and does in fact have strong anti-Semitic views, and CNN was in part being accused of amplifying those views.
- meira 10y agoYou are just saying that MSM way of handling fake news is more professional than alt right fake news. I think it only makes the matter worse.
- pcwalton 10y agoIf by "more professional" you mean "with infinitely more regard for the real truth", then sure.
- meira 10y agoAll these Russians accusation thing is fake news. Very professional.
- tptacek 10y agoNo, they are not. For the n-th time: there's a distinction between stories that don't pan out (this isn't even one of those!) and fakenews, which is a form of webspam. The continued insistence that any discussion of fakenews include litigation of all the flaws of all other news media is a form of trolling, meant to prevent us from discussing the phenomenon of fakenews.
- tptacek 10y agoNo, that is in fact not what I'm saying.
- internaut 10y ago> because Spencer is in fact a white supremacist Ethnonationalism is to Suprematism as Socialism is to Communism. > does in fact have strong anti-Semitic views He does like Israel a lot. Uses words like 'role model' and 'poster child'. Spencer is deliberately pressing the buttons that trigger Democrats. 'Misapprehending' is the entire point of his recent exercises. The post-election trauma requires a new Devil since Trump is more subdued/presidential and lo'. In return he gets half hour interviews at NPR and CNN to explain his platform... Maybe you should take care for that fifth column tptacek!
