I wear modern dailies (1-Day Acuvue Moist) and it costs me under $500/yr, and that's not including the discounts I get from my insurance. I couldn't believe the positive impact dailies have had on my life - I can't even tell I'm wearing contacts, my dry eye is all but gone, and allergy season is now bearable to me. Even if it was $1k/yr, paying $3/day for perfect eyesight with no discomfort or hassle is still an absolute no brainer.
