Nowadays, you can still ignore: while you're so low down on the stack that you don't have to worry about that stuff, new newbs don't have to worry about that stuff because they're too high up the stack. Many new newbs learn javascript, so not only are they upstack, they still have to deal with the "joy" of re-writing the display by hand every frame. And I should know, because I was one (although I learned python, and never got into the graphics stuff).
