When are we going to get an airplay express now the airport express is going away. And I don't want to maintain a raspberry pi or deal with some airplay speaker's bad airplay implementation.
- danudey 10y agoI'd happily pay a decent sum for a 5 GHz-capable AirPlay speaker system.
- spiderfarmer 10y agoApple Music with Airplay is in every way inferior to Spotify with Spotify Connect. - Airplay still drains my mobile's battery - I can't control an Airplay stream from multiple devices. - If I go out of range with my mobile the stream stops. - Airplay devices are way overpriced.
- mahyarm 10y agoChromecast acts the same too. Apple needs to make an airplay v2 that does from device pull like the newer ones do. I tried to outfit everything with chromecasts, but the general airplay integration with the OS made me go full airplay instead.
- closeparen 10y agoThere isn't any maintenance. I've had 2 RPi Shairplay servers running in my parents' house for 3 years now, no service calls.
- mahyarm 10y agoHow often do you update them? Do they autoupdate themselves like an apple airplay router could? Has that gone wrong?
- closeparen 10y agoI let Debian install security updates automatically; they haven't broken anything so far. The devices are only available from the LAN and only expose SSH, Bonjour, and the actual Airplay protocol server, so I'm not too worried. I wrote a systemd unit for the daemon so it comes up again on a power cycle, and encapsulated the config in a puppet repo for repeatable deploys (did the first one by hand, developed puppet and used it for them both when it came time for the second installation). Hardest part was WiFi, you have set some config flag to keep the dongle from falling asleep when idle. But I caught that on the first day of deployment, and it hasn't been an issue since. If you don't want a Linux project or an expensive project, there are cheap Bluetooth audio receivers on Amazon.
