Oh and now we're supposed to believe Red China is actually doing something altruistic for the environment? Please, give me a break.
- pygy_ 10y agoMaybe "Red China" realised it was on the same planet as the rest of us, and needed it in good health for its own survival?
- TenOhms 10y agoJudging by the insane smog in their major cities, I'd say they have been pretty short-sighted in what is good for their health.
- darklajid 10y agoThere were various articles about this recently and not all pollution is created equal. Local high ppm counts might be a problem for the local population and look absolutely insane, but those won't create a global warming effect. Blowing CO2 etc. into the atmosphere doesn't look bad in your postcard pictures, but actually adds to the climate problem. Don't conflate the two things, 'covered in smog' doesn't necessarily mean 'worse than my industrial area with clean skies'.
- woodandsteel 10y agoChinese coal-powered generating plants produce pollution that causes huge health problems, and also put CO2 into the atmosphere. Also, China cares about global climate change because it has a big desert on its Western side that is spreading. And finally, China is making a ton of money exporting renewable energy technology. So China is acting very much in its self-interest.
- norikki 10y agoThis article conflates global greenhouse gas concentrations with local air pollution. The idea that the communist party of China cares so much about the global environment to actually do something about climate change, but won't even clean up the local air pollution in its major cities that drastically reduce the immediate quality of life of their citizens is absurd. Talk is cheap. China isn't reducing green house gas emissions one iota. However, China's leaders are smart and will put pressure on the USA to do so in order to give an advantage to Chinese manufacturers. Trump is calling them out on their hypocrisy. China wasn't the first to push global warming for financial gain, but they sure will if our leaders are stupid enough to let them get away with it.
- forgotpwtomain 10y agoTrump isn't calling them out for their hypocrisy - Trump is denying Global Warming stems from human causes - a position that all none crank scientists are now in agreement on. You are welcome to defend his positions/politics but let's not pretend they are something other than what they are.
- justicezyx 10y agoCome on, there is no Red China. China is ruled similarly by the rich and powerful, just like US. Their differences are just in form, not substance...
