Consider Pokémon Go, which when it was initially released required full access to your Gmail account. To play America's most popular game, you practically had to give it power of attorney.
To nitpick this totally inconsequential point: you could use a Pokémon Trainer Club account instead of a Google account if you wanted to. Most people still chose the convenience of logging into their existing account instead of creating a new one, though.
- GuiA 10y agoThe Pokémon Trainer Club registration was down for days and days. Most people had no choice if they wanted to play.
- StavrosK 10y agoAlso, apps that request Google Account access can't actually read your mail, can they... It's just a verification that you own that email address.
- tonyarkles 10y agoWhen you request account access, there's a scope parameter to specify which aspects you want. They had inadvertently set that to "all" instead of "user info". Those oauth tokens would have been keys to the kingdom.
