Everyone should have a side-project like yours, it's normal. Every employer should attempt to stop their employees from having such side projects (unless they own them, like Google's 20% thing). That's also normal. Just keep doing stuff on the side and don't tell them. They're not paying you enough to own you. Maybe they're paying you enough to slow you down, but never enough to own you.
