Ask HN: Is a chronological timeline wrong approach?
I admit that this will be a little bit a whining question, but it is something which has bothered me for a long time:
What's wrong with a chronologically sorted list of information?
In last decade, I have started using all these social networks and get used to the way they sorted information. Initially, it was very simple - for example initial Twitter's timeline was awesome. It has been great at how to take short information, insert it into chronologically sorted list and display it to users. It was simple and for me it worked great.
But then something happened at Facebook and they started to "sort" my News Feed. It escalated so brutal, that 90% of information presented to me is barely relevant. Even the "Most Recent" tab has somehow sorted data, from previous week(s). I understand that there is algorithm which is suppose to sort posts based on my previous behavior, preferences, location, etc., but where is the simplest option? Why I can't sort it chronologically?
When trying to figure out this "problem" I've came across multiple browser extensions(seriously?), some hacks and some "pro tips" and none of them seemed like viable solution.
Is here someone else with the same problem and wondering what is wrong with showing data in chronological list?
I truly believe that the way the data are being curated and presented is over-engineered and the final solution basically reduces the readability and usability of these products.
