Knuth - The Art of computer programming: http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=2221790 http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=2221790 I remember a friend and I used to play with this chapter while in college, complaining how bad the random number generator in Pascal was because it could not pass a cube test (get 3 random values as x,y,z points and plot them in a cube - after 1000-2000 iterations the cube showed a lot empty places - some PRNGs even showed checkboard patterns).
