I watched my dad die and it was obvious. In that case the bloodflow to the brain collapsed due to swelling so it was rather abrupt. Before the body reacted to pain in ways I recognised and even the breathing was somehow 'his' even if he could not breathe on his how. The higher functions of the brain was hopefully gone at this point. Afterwards, it was nothing left. Just a mechanical thing.
