I don't think there's any mystery at all what Trump plans to do. It's right there in his big plan PDF:
* Repeal ACA
* Keep pre-existing conditions aspect.
* Keep 26-and-under insured by parents.
* Boost health savings accounts.
The last one has been suggested many times by many Republicans. It seems painfully obvious to me why it is preferred by the GOP: The more money you make the more it makes sense.
Health savings accounts essentially amount to discounts on your taxes. If you're in the 31% tax bracket it means (in simplified terms) you're paying 69 cents on the dollar for health related expenses. If you're in the 44% tax bracket you're paying 56 cents on the dollar for your health related expenses.
It's a huge handout to the rich and is completely useless to the poor who can't afford to put thousands of dollars away each year towards (future) health expenditures.
I can't think of a tax proposal that more embodies the beliefs of the GOP than health savings accounts...
* Reduces taxes
* Does nothing to control costs (that's socialism!)
* Completely ignores the poor
* Barely beneficial to the middle class
* Completely ignores reality
The last one seems to be the cornerstone of the GOP these days. From ignoring global warming to ignoring the war on drugs to ignoring the mass incarceration and unfair treatment of minorities. They are the party of no empathy.
- deelowe 10y agoHSAs do very little to benefit the rich. Do you have an HSA? I do. The max contribution per year is less than a 401k. The rich care very little about sub 4 figure annual investments. Trumps policy says nothing of reforming contribution limits There is no 44% federal tax bracket. The max is ~40%. Either way, I seriously doubt someone making $400k+ per year gives a crap about a sub $4,000 tax deduction. That's not even 1% of their annual income.. What's your definition of middle class? Mine is the kind of people that would benefit from things like 529 plans, 401ks and HSAs. Basically all of my co-workers. http://taxfoundation.org/article/2016-tax-brackets http://taxfoundation.org/article/2016-tax-brackets https://www.shrm.org/resourcesandtools/hr-topics/benefits/pages/2016-hsa-limits.aspx https://www.shrm.org/resourcesandtools/hr-topics/benefits/pa... https://www.donaldjtrump.com/positions/healthcare-reform https://www.donaldjtrump.com/positions/healthcare-reform
- basch 10y agoFirst, lets look what happened right after the ACA was announced (Ratigan tears Wasserman a new one, its too bad this point didnt get taken more seriously. Instead everyone said "lets take what we can get, compromise is better than nothing.) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxjQckmSaSc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxjQckmSaSc then https://www.greatagain.gov/policy/healthcare.html https://www.greatagain.gov/policy/healthcare.html >To maximize choice and create a dynamic market for health insurance, the Administration will work with Congress to enable people to purchase insurance across state lines. >Maximize flexibility for States in administering Medicaid, to enable States to experiment with innovative methods to deliver healthcare to our low-income citizens You tell me if Trump and Ratigan are on the same page.
