I've taken a long hard look at myself and I share oldmanjay's sentiments. You have other beliefs and other priorities, that's fine with me.

- arethuza 10y agoOut of interest, how would you summarize your political views? You are perfectly entitled to your views, but they appear to be so completely different to my own that I am genuinely interested to find out what you believe. [NB As a bit of background I'm from the UK, strongly in favour of the socialist NHS we have and happy to pay taxes so that everyone in our country can get pretty decent healthcare "free at the point of delivery"] Edit: I upvoted you because I don't think people should be downvoted just for making that comment.
- jlewallen 10y agoI applaud your efforts to understand this as I'm eager to also. It's a mentality or similar to one I've found myself in deadlock with before. For example, I asked a relative of mine if they would sacrifice themselves to save the lives of N number of people and there was no value of N they considered worth more than their own life. This relative found it uncomfortably easy to ignore and even justify the suffering of strangers. Not to say that the GP feels precisely this way. I'd hate to ascribe this particular belief to anybody that didn't directly espouse it.
- gspetr 10y agoI believe this book will help you to understand: https://archive.org/stream/MightIsRight_966/MightIsRight#page/n0/mode/2up https://archive.org/stream/MightIsRight_966/MightIsRight#pag...
- arethuza 10y agoIn case anyone is wondering what that link is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Might_Is_Right https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Might_Is_Right
- arethuza 10y agoI think that's a completely different argument and one that I'm not sure anyone could come up with a sensible answer unless they were actually put in that position. However, I can definitely understand the argument that being forced to pay taxes to pay for the healthcare of other people is unfair. I just happen to not agree with it but I don't think its unreasonable that other people don't agree with me on that point.
- jlewallen 10y agoAgreed, and sorry, didn't mean to imply they were similar arguments at all.
