- vetinari 10y agoReal news sources are dead and actual investigative journalists do not exist anymore.
- paublyrne 10y agoWell that's patently not a true statement. The Guardian, the NY Times, and Der Spiegel are the first three publications that do important investigations that come to mind but they are not alone. There are a lot of PR plants even in the more reputable newspapers, which is unfortunate, but there are still regular thorough investigations, which I assume are getting harder to do as money and resources continue to shrink.
- doomlaser 10y agoThe blind NYTimes bias has been readily apparent in this election cycle. WaPo as well. The entire media system missed this election. A staffer in the Obama White House remarked on the quality of reporting now, as of a few months ago: "All these newspapers used to have foreign bureaus. Now they don’t. They call us to explain to them what’s happening in Moscow and Cairo. Most of the outlets are reporting on world events from Washington. The average reporter we talk to is 27 years old, and their only reporting experience consists of being around political campaigns. That’s a sea change. They literally know nothing." https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/erik-wemple/wp/2016/05/05/white-house-official-on-some-reporters-overseas-expertise-they-literally-know-nothing/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/erik-wemple/wp/2016/05/...
- vetinari 10y agoOn this side of the pond, The Guardian is also so biased, that it is not worth reading anymore.
- linkregister 10y agoThat said, NYT performed some significant investigative reporting. Though Gawker broke the Clinton private email server story, the New York Times vastly expanded the investigation and brought the story into the mainstream. The statement that the entire media system missed the election is an exaggeration. One function of the NYT, the election prediction section, failed. It shouldn't reflect on the various investigative reporters doing actual digging.
- doomlaser 10y agoI would recommend reading this commentary, from the political director of CBS News, today: "The mood in the Washington press corps is bleak, and deservedly so. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that, with a few exceptions, we were all tacitly or explicitly #WithHer, which has led to a certain anguish in the face of Donald Trump’s victory. More than that and more importantly, we also missed the story, after having spent months mocking the people who had a better sense of what was going on. This is all symptomatic of modern journalism’s great moral and intellectual failing: its unbearable smugness. Had Hillary Clinton won, there’s be a winking “we did it” feeling in the press, a sense that we were brave and called Trump a liar and saved the republic." http://www.cbsnews.com/news/commentary-the-unbearable-smugness-of-the-press-presidential-election-2016/ http://www.cbsnews.com/news/commentary-the-unbearable-smugne...
- mmel 10y agoI'm frankly amazed that was published at CBS and not some pseudonymous post on medium.
- dajohnson89 10y agoThe Ny times has a paid option, they have world class investigative journalism...
- randyrand 10y agoI do. Now how do we convince everyone else?
- rufus_2 10y agoShow them the DNC Leaks - they'll inspire trust for the traditional media in anyone.
- brandon272 10y agoThis. Their aggregator is ridiculously bad. Even the sources of news it shows you when you click on a "trending" item lead to really terrible sites. I'd rather the news feed be an actual news feed and show me legit news from legit agencies.
- alexc05 10y agoThis is actually an incredible option ... and for me, quite a mind-blowing one. Could news.facebook.com be an actual content-producer with real journalism? Large, investigative projects on what is possibly the world's largest distribution platform.
