I also share the same experience, I really wanted to get into Atom but found the experience clunky, can't quite put a finger on it, but Atom felt more like a web app running on a thin client, whereas VS Code, while I know it's the same deal, feels very much like a desktop IDE.
Yup, definitely not going back unless they fuck it up which I highly doubt, Microsoft of 2016 is very different from 2006.
