Donald Trump’s presidency is going to be a disaster for the white working class
- dudul 10y agoSo the guys who didn't see the outcome of the election coming are now predicting the entire next 4 years. Some people never learn huh?
- intopieces 10y agoDo you have any particular policy points or data-based disagreements with the argument?
- a3n 10y agoWell, yeah, you have a point. I myself am doubting that I've ever understood anything about the world, the result is such a shock. However, manufacturing is never "coming back," it's already here, just automated with fewer people, and different. The world can only absorb so many cars and sponges. So those tariffs are just going to raise prices for people who are un- or underemployed and can't afford what they need now. There are already more job openings than applicants. Getting rid of the illegal workforce is going to cost businesses (or drive some out of business), raising prices, etc etc. A few unemployed will fill some of those jobs, but at legal rates with employment taxes. Getting rid of health insurance that many of his supporters are now enjoying is going to be a whiff of smelling salts to some of them. My greatest hope is that he tries to follow through on everything in his contract with America. The chaos could potentially turn the 2018 mid term elections. That and inevitable demographics will rid us of his ilk in 2020, 2024 at the latest. But like I said at the top, I doubt my own faculties today.
- jrnichols 10y agoThat's a pretty bold statement for them to make, but Vox has been so rabidly anti-Trump that I'm not surprised to see even more. Lots of links! to other Vox articles. They're saying that he's just going to cut off health care for millions of people, but even Bloomberg says "Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said that as president he would use Medicaid to cover poor people who can’t afford private health insurance, and make birth control available without a prescription." This is pretty much a big rehash of Vox's previous anti-Trump talking points. Now that Clinton lost, that's about all they have to cling to.
- a3n 10y ago> but even Bloomberg says "Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said that as president he would use Medicaid to cover poor people who can’t afford private health insurance, He might try, but haven't the Reps fought exactly that? "It's single payer!" Or maybe "we thought of it so it's OK" will kick in.
