Oh you mean unlike the login-wall they've put up for every article in the past two weeks? That open access?
Edit: I'm pretty mad that every NYT link I've been clicking for what has felt like two weeks has asked me to login. I was forced to finally make an account. Screw that. I'd pay if you gave me an option that made sense. I'm not going to drop $500+/year to subscribe to all the places I read from when I only read what is posted on HN and Twitter. You'd think Apple would at least help out here since they have it all nicely integrated on the Apple News app to handle subscriptions for them.
- nefitty 10y agoIncognito didn't work for you?

- grzm 10y agoThen don't click on NYT links, or others that require you to subscribe. HN conveniently marks the source.
- mmphosis 10y agoPWDR
- grzm 10y agopaywall; didn't read?
- 0xCMP 10y agoI wish it didn't have to be that way. I like reading what the NYT publishes, just like how I enjoy Salon/WSJ/Forbes/WashPost/etc.. I just wish it wasn't "all or nothing". Why do I need to subscribe for $15-20/month so I can read the one article I really wanted to read from HN? I don't have time to sit there and enjoy that subscription, just isn't the kind of time I have, so could I just have like a lite version somehow that lets me pay for what I want? Something like Brave, but I just wish it was more accepted.
- gnicholas 10y agoYep, like the LA Times, it looks like NYT is running this promo as a way to get people to create accounts and/or log in. Interestingly, I'm getting no registration request in Chrome, but I consistently get it in Firefox. I'm running different extensions in each, so it might not be the browser that is causing the behavior. For the record, I don't mind paying for news, but I don't love the "freebie" tactic they're using here. If you want to activate/bolster your paywall, go for it. But don't try to cover it up with an election giveaway.
- grzm 10y agoWhat's your opinion on free trials in general? Are they bad? Or is it bad in this case because it's associated to the US election?
- gnicholas 10y agoFree trials are fine. But pretending that you're doing a public service by doing a free trial—at precisely the same time that you're tightening up your paywall is not my style. But thinking deeply about it, I don't think there's much of a public service in running an election-related free trial. With 10 free articles a month, many people wouldn't have run into the paywall during this very short window (Mon-Wed). Either they're hitting the paywall either way, or they're not hitting it at all.
- ternaryoperator 10y ago>I'm not going to drop $500+/year to subscribe to all the places I read from when I only read what is posted on HN and Twitter. Yikes, all your reading originates from posts on HN and TWTR? Seems like that gives you a limited view of the world, no?
- Kliment 10y agoA more charitable interpretation is that they would not end up on nyt pages except via those sources.
- 0xCMP 10y agoIn this case more charitable is also more accurate.
- 0xCMP 10y agoIt does, but I'm the type that wants to read everything. I limit myself to what shows up. Not the best, but I have things I know I should be doing vs trying to filter out the signal vs the noise in all the different publications I want to read.
- DanBC 10y agoAt the top of the HN page for the submission there is a [web] link. Right click it, and open in an incognito window. That will search the web for the article title, and will normally return the article as the first hit. Clicky that.
- 0xCMP 10y agoDidn't work when I tried. There was a post here on HN where apparently people posted the command to use wget and w3m to view the article.
- 0x0 10y agoSo I'm still getting a login-wall clicking on articles on the front page. What's the deal here? Is this geo-IP limited?
- 24gttghh 10y agoI find it funny that people complain about paying for their news, when large newspapers for the longest time weren't (and still are not) free...
- 0xCMP 10y agoFor clarification: I'm not against paying, I just want a better way to pay. I'm just not willing to pay $15-20/month when I rarely read what they publish unless it shows up on Twitter or HN.
- 24gttghh 10y agoAnd that seems like a reasonable request. FWIW I don't pay for any news subscriptions either.
