It's not just Apple. FreeBSD for the last several years has been purging itself of GPL software as well. Going so far as to go through the pain of yanking out gcc for the llvm suite for the OS and ported applications.

FreeBSD (and the other BSD flavors) are under the BSD license, no?

  The software they originated, yes. Software they got from elsewhere (like GCC), not necessarily.

    Correct. But they used the gcc compiler toolchain, plenty of GPL gnu utilities and libraries. All replaced with BSD licensed rewrites now.
