Being "simple" is the privilege of those things riding the first big wave.

- nickpsecurity 10y agoGood point. Instead of decay, I frame it up as complexity gradually increasing as tool is expanded in capabilities and environment it operates. The modern setup of those old, "simple" protocols is anything but simple. It's a huge mess of messes. The solutions that replace such messes are often complicated themselves due to the operating environment and existing interfaces if nothing else. This doesn't even get into the politics of replacing someone in the Internet backbone. :)
