Part of the issue is their desire to keep the product vegan. Instead of using known-safe, health-promoting sources of polyunsaturated (O3/O6) fats like fish oil, they use algal sources, which have very little data supporting them as safe/effective sources of O3.

- st3v3r 10y agoThat shouldn't be paying customers.
- greendragon 10y agoUnless a lot of their customers are vegan.
- the8472 10y agoI do assume the supplier first tested the toxicity on animals. Then soylent did internal tests with the new ingredients and found no problems either. How else are you going to find 1:10000+ problems?

- briHass 10y agoThe sources mentioned in that article are ALA, which have conversion rates to the desired DHA/EPA that vary greatly between individuals [1]. Typically, something like 5% of ALA is converted to EPA and even less is converted to DHA. It's better to eat the preformed DHA/EPA rather than relying on the conversion. edit: Harvard health seems to even disagree with themselves: http://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/why-not-flaxseed-oil http://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/why-not-flaxse... - botexpert 10y agoThere are good quality studies on vegans showing pollutant free omega 3 algal source works extraordinarily well. [1] Keeping the product vegan is an image choice that many similar companies take.
