Do you really need to "keep up" with whatever changes are happening? Are you using frameworks to solve your problems or are you learning about them because of some vague idea that you should? I start my JavaScript projects with just an index.js and no dependencies and take it from there. If I turn out to need some actual complex UI updating stuff, I'll throw in React and use it in the simplest way I can.
