Another area for growth is multipurpose strip malls. Shops on the first floor, housing on one or two additional floors.
- scharfstevenm 10y agoArgh, that idea is great in dense cities, but in suburban towns this type of mixed use has failed miserably. The customers from the housing aren't nearly enough to sustain the shops. The shops need a lot of foot traffic to survive, or a lot of parking, and neither usually exists, so the shops quickly fail. We have seen this in Cupertino multiple times. There tends to be a lot of lunch time walking and cycling to restaurants by Apple employees, but that is declining as Apple consolidates their far-flung buildings and opens more Caffè Macs with subsidized lunches. At night, those Apple employees leave on buses (or in cars) and the restaurants struggle and eventually close.
