Socialism is the cause of such deaths in the same sense that capitalism is. Rather than say political theory A is responsible for x, y, and z maybe it's more accurate and more meaningful to say that when too much power is concentrated in too few people then bad things happen. Going off on socialism or whatever theory one doesn't like misses the point. Namely, that one fact of human existence appears to be that people with too much power have too great a tendency to wield it with disastrous results. So let's advocate for a system where power is distributed amongst sufficiently many people with a variety of viewpoints. And then hope for the best.
