  He did take a lot of flak, and I'm pretty sure he never really brought it up again.

  An outlier if he did. He was then sabotaged by the other one that didn't care. That left only Trump paying attention to the rural people which got him more support from them. Almost all I know are pro-Trump if they're non-liberal white including some moderates that hate Hillary. I think the Democrats could pivot to appeal to both minorities and poor/exploited whites as MLK did that exact thing. He was so effective by doing that they killed him in my hometown to prevent a chance of revolution in Washington. Of course, these politicians don't really want to raise up the lower classes so maybe that's why they keep the division going. ;)
