Not sure if you read the book but it's far from a happy-go-lucky-optimism, if anything Pinker is as cynical about human nature as Thomas Hobbs. Heck, you can even call this book the Leviathan 2. With that being said I think he does a good job providing a lot of nuance, data, and qualitative arguments. And tbqh, it's convincing.
