Although they didn't win, the Lib Dems did fairly well in the Witney by-election and they are certainly making a big deal about the upcoming Richmond Park by-election. A lot can happen before the next general election, and the next local elections aren't until May, after the government intends to trigger Article 50. And the Lib Dems still only have eight MPs. So whilst I'm sure the Lib Dems will be doing a lot of campaigning, they remain in a rather weak position.
