Surely only citizens would get basic income? If an immigrant wants it, they'll have to become a naturalized citizen which takes enough effort that they probably deserve it.
- marcoperaza 10y agoThat would make it impossible for immigrants to house and feed themselves, with the market adapted for everyone making a basic income.
- mordocai 10y agoIdeally this wouldn't happen, but with our current amount of regulation you are probably right that it would happen. In any case, legal immigrants sound okay to me. Obviously illegal immigrants aren't going to get it.
- JoeAltmaier 10y agoIf everybody doesn't get it (the BI) you just create a new indentured class. Illegal immigrants don't get here without the cooperation of some citizens. Its an industry. Which will flourish as the gap between laborers and citizens widens (with a BI)
- MrZongle2 10y ago"Surely only citizens would get basic income?" At first? Probably. Eventually? No. It is too ripe of a target for pandering politicians.
- _0ffh 10y agoYou mean politicians pandering to non-citizens who do not have the right to vote?
- marcoperaza 10y agoPolitics isn't a one time game. Those people become citizens, and their children are born citizens.
- MrZongle2 10y agoWho says they won't have a right to vote by then? Some panderers have already tried to change that: http://nypost.com/2016/02/22/new-bill-could-give-illegal-aliens-voting-rights-in-new-york-city/ http://nypost.com/2016/02/22/new-bill-could-give-illegal-ali... Additionally, they might not be directly pandering to the non-citizens, but to advocacy groups and their supporters. Lastly, I think the chances of politicians pandering to non-citizens are at least somewhat greater than basic income being implemented in the United States. So there's that to chew on.
- dragonwriter 10y agoResident aliens (legal immigrants) are eligible for many of the public benefit programs UBI is prepared to replace, so it would be unsurprising if they were included in UBI.
- mordocai 10y agoAh, was not aware. That makes sense.
