TLDR: "Bryan Cantrill is not a racist or a sexist. But he's still an asshole, so can't we purge him anyway?"
"Have you ever kissed a girl?" was a jerk move, there's no doubt. He's apologized for that. On the other hand, Cantrill has not (to my knowledge) posted any long collective denunciations of another human being on the public Internet. Butter, no doubt, wouldn't melt in OP's mouth.
I sometimes wonder if anyone these days has any idea why it isn't illegal (or at least tortious) to be an asshole. If there's someone you know, even someone you work with, who's an asshole, why can't you get them arrested? Or at least sue them? "Your honor, we believe the record will more than amply reflect the reality that defendant is a total dick."
- erikpukinskis 10y agoWhat do you mean "purge"? This post seems narrowly focused on not attending an event he is putting on. Surely you are aware that many people, like yourself, have no problem with Bryan's behavior and will ensure this event is well attended regardless. I don't understand how giving people information they can use to decide whether to attend an event is "purging" a human being. P.S. I'm having a hard time parsing the sarcasm in your post. Is there a reason you don't want to state your opinion on the matter directly?
- empthought 10y agoThere are over twenty people on the program committee; this isn't exactly a solo effort on Cantrill's part. One may as well refuse to attend Berkeley because John Yoo is a professor there.
- erikpukinskis 10y ago> One may as well refuse to attend Berkeley because John Yoo is a professor there. What's wrong with that? There are plenty of universities. No one is being required to attend or work at Cal.
- empthought 10y agoThere's nothing wrong with it, aside from it's a stupid reason.
- mc32 10y agoI agree. People should go there for the content and insight rather than the personalities (unless it's a personality gathering). It's not like going there is all about interacting with Mr Cantrill. One would hope people are going for the content and the many other attendees who might offer something to talk about. On the other hand, if you don't want to go, simply don't go. Why is there a need to shout out decisions? HEYYYY, I'm not going to the Safeway, the CASHIER looked at me CROSS-EYED!!! Ok, fine, go to another grocer. Do I have to tell everyone of my choice?
