Breezing through life without life changing adversity gives little opportunity for self reflection and contemplation unless one happens to be interested in problems beyond one's own. And if the thinking of 'us and them' takes hold whether in the rich, poor or other groupings there is always dehumanization, reductionism, blame and sociopathy. Those in adversity or have faced adversity will identify with others and may need or have received the help of other people leading to some kind of mutual empathy.
